01What's included

What €790 actually buys

This is the whole list. Nothing on this page is an upsell, and if something is missing from the list we do not quietly charge for it either — ask and we will tell you straight.

  • The hall from 09:00 to 02:00

Seventeen hours. Set up in the morning, dance until two. Not a four-hour slot with an overrun fee waiting at the end of it.

  • 220 chairs and 26 tables

Stacked in the side room and yours to arrange however you like. Ralf will help you carry them and will not invoice you for it.

  • The kitchen

A six-ring range, two ovens, a 900-litre fridge and a dishwasher that clears a rack in three minutes. Bring your own caterer, or your own aunt.

  • Bar, glassware, ice

Glasses for 220, an ice machine and a cold room. Bring your own drinks — we do not sell any, so there is no corkage to invent.

  • Sound and house light

A PA with two speakers and a wired microphone, plus dimmable house light. Your DJ plugs in with a jack lead and gets on with it.

  • 40 parking spaces

Free, on site, unbarriered. Westerfilde S-Bahn station is a six-minute walk for anyone who would rather not drive home.

  • The key the evening before

Collect it at 18:00 the day before at no extra cost, so you can decorate slowly instead of at seven in the morning.

  • A caretaker who answers

Ralf lives two streets away and picks up the phone until midnight. He has fixed a blown fuse in a wedding dress before.

02Prices

Three prices. That is all of them.

What you pay depends only on the date. Not on your guest list, not on your budget, not on how the conversation goes. The calendar below works the same numbers out for any day you like.

Summer Saturday

Saturday, May to September

€1.290

The busiest twenty-two dates of the year. If you want one, ask early — most go a year ahead.

Weekend rate

Friday and Sunday all year · Saturday in April and October

€890

The same hall, the same hours, the same everything. A Sunday wedding is the best-kept secret in Dortmund.

Winter and weekdays

November to March any day · Monday to Thursday all year

€790

Our lowest rate, and the one on the sign outside. Winter weddings here are warm, bright and half-empty of other people's weddings.

The only extras

Chair covers
White, laundered, entirely optional. Most people look at the chairs and skip them.
€1,50 each
Final cleaning
Or sweep and mop it yourself before you hand the key back and pay nothing at all.
€120 flat
Key the evening before
Included. We list it here because other halls charge for it.
€0
Deposit
Held against damage and refunded to your account within five working days.
€250

All prices include 19% VAT. There is no service charge, no corkage, no minimum spend, no kitchen fee and no per-guest fee.

03Calendar

Half-price dates

Every Sunday. Every Saturday from November to March. Those days are green below.

We call them half-price dates. Strictly it is 39% and 31% off a summer Saturday, and “roughly a third off” never fitted on the sign outside. The exact euro figure is printed on every single day in the calendar, so you can hold us to it.

04The hall

One hall, two setups

Saal Vier is a 1974 community hall on Speckestraße: a sprung parquet floor, four tall windows facing south, a five-metre ceiling and a row of paper lanterns that were put up in 2009 and have stayed because people like them. It is a plain room. That is precisely the point — it takes decoration beautifully and costs almost nothing to have.

Two ways to lay it out

The hall laid out for a wedding banquet with round tables, white cloths and simple green foliage

Banquet

140 seated

Fourteen round tables of ten, with a dance floor left standing at the window end. Nothing has to be moved during the evening.

The hall laid out in straight rows of white chairs facing an aisle for a ceremony

Rows

220 seated

Straight rows facing an aisle for a ceremony or a service. Two people rearrange it into a buffet and a bar in about twenty minutes.

The hall as it actually looks

These photographs are untouched daylight, taken on an ordinary Tuesday. We have not put a bride in them and we have not warmed up the colours.

  • The stainless steel catering kitchen at Saal Vier with a range, oven and dish rack
The kitchen. Six rings, two ovens, and yours.
  • Three large white paper lantern globes hanging from the plain hall ceiling
The lanterns. Up since 2009, still fine.
  • The plain foyer of Saal Vier with glass doors, terrazzo floor and an empty coat rack
The foyer. Terrazzo, coat rack, no fuss.
  • Stacked white folding chairs and folded trestle tables against a pale wall
    The chairs, between weddings.

05Catering

Catering, if you want it

You do not have to use any of them. The kitchen is yours either way, none of these firms pay us a commission, and we do not take a cut of your food bill. They are on this page because our guests kept asking who was good.

  • Küçük Catering

    Lütgendortmund

    Turkish and German buffets

    from €14 per head

Does 200 covers without breaking a sweat. Brings its own chafing dishes.

  • Fleischerei Brandt

    Westerfilde

Cold platters, roast pork, a Currywurst stand at midnight

    from €9 per head

Two streets away. Will deliver at 11:00 and collect the trays on Monday.

  • Tandoor Haus

    Marten

North Indian buffet, vegetarian and halal

    from €16 per head

The only one of the four that also brings its own staff for the evening.

  • Konditorei Lemke

    Huckarde

Wedding cakes and the afternoon coffee table

    from €4,50 per head

Three tiers, no pillars, no sugar swans unless you insist.

Or cook it yourself

Two or three families a month do exactly that, and the kitchen was built for it. There is no fee for using it, no requirement to hire a chef and no list of approved suppliers. Bring your own pots if you want the big ones — ours hold 40 litres.

06FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Can we really bring our own drinks?

Yes. We do not sell drinks at all, so there is no bar income for us to protect with a corkage charge. Bring crates, bring a keg, bring your uncle's homemade Schnaps. The cold room is included and so is the ice machine.

Is there a minimum spend or a minimum number of guests?

No, neither. We have let this hall for a 34-person golden wedding and for a 214-person Turkish engagement in the same month, at the same price. The rate is for the room, not for the people in it.

How late can we play music?

Until midnight with the windows open, and until 02:00 with them closed and the terrace doors shut. Speckestraße is residential and our neighbours have been patient for fifty years, so we hold that line properly — but 02:00 is a genuine 02:00, not a polite hint at half past midnight.

Do we have to clean up afterwards?

You take your decorations, your bottles and your food waste. The floor is either yours to sweep and mop before you hand back the key, or ours for a flat €120. Most people book the €120 and go to bed.

Can we get married here, or only celebrate?

A free ceremony (freie Trauung) with your own celebrant is completely fine in the hall and costs nothing extra. The registry office itself is Standesamt Dortmund-Mengede, nine minutes away by car, and most couples sign there in the morning and arrive here at two.

Can we see the hall before we book?

The first Sunday of every month, from 11:00 to 14:00, the hall is open and no appointment is needed. If that never suits, ring Ralf and he will meet you there on a weekday evening. We have never charged anyone to look at a room.

What happens if we have to cancel?

More than 90 days before the date: you get the whole €250 deposit back. Between 90 and 30 days: we keep €125. Inside 30 days: we keep the €250. There is no further charge and no percentage of the hire fee, because the hire fee is not due until the week of the event.

Is the hall accessible?

Step-free from the car park to the floor, no thresholds inside, and a wide accessible WC with a fold-down rail off the foyer. The stage has two steps and no ramp — that is the one place we cannot yet get everyone, and we say so rather than leave you to find out.

07Enquire

Ask about a date

A person reads every enquiry and answers within one working day with a yes or a no and a price. No brochure, no “from” prices, no sales call at half past six in the evening.
